Day 64 AIM: How should I respond to a kid that drops the “N” bomb in class?

Do Now: Don’t hesitate to be harsh to the perpetrator. Identify the target and immediately single them out. At this point, the students in the classroom should be silent, mostly because they realize the severity of what’s to come. Approach the culprit and ask them to repeat what they said. Even if the kid’s not the sharpest tool in the shed, they’re probably not stupid enough to fall through that trap door. They know what they said, everyone knows what they said. So then ask them another question. “Why did you say that?” Students will answer with one of two things: (1) it was an accident or (2) silence. If they respond with the former, then “accidentally” assign them a 2 page essay on the historical root and meaning of the word “nigger.” And if it’s the latter, “silently” assign them a 2 page essay on the historical root and meaning of the word “nigger.”
